Created during covid-19 Lockdown

On Modern Yesterdays Kaki continues to deconstruct and redefine the boundaries of the guitar through technique, imagination, and boundless humanity. The album was co-produced by Kaki, Chloe Alexandra Thompson and Arjan Miranda, with sound design by Chloe Alexandra Thompson.

Several of the songs on Modern Yesterdays were written as part of an experimental theater piece Kaki recently developed called "Data Not Found", which explores themes of connection, alienation and rebirth, and how we as humans attempt to create meaning from the vast endless patterns of our world. With the pandemic postponing the launch of "Data Not Found", and in the midst of COVID-19, Kaki has now found fresh meaning in all of it.

“We talk about ‘the before,’ or ‘back before the outbreak,’ and that was five, six months ago," notes Kaki. "Time has barely passed. So I think there is a bit of a looking back that we’re all now doing in every way about what we miss — what was good, what was bad, all of it. I think that we’re all yearning in some ways for our modern yesterday.”

Stuck at home due to COVID-19, and juggling the care of her two small children with her wife,

Kaki decided to make a stay-at-home “travel video” for “Teek”.

Considered one of the most unique and influential guitarists of our time, Kaki King continues to deconstruct and redefine the role of solo instrumental artist though virtuoso technique, insatiable imagination, and boundless humanity. Her now-signature multi-media performance, both provocative and moving, uses projection mapping to present the guitar as a tool that can shape both music and video content, all triggered (and often improvised live) via her Ovation Adamas Signature 6-String Acoustic guitar, customized specifically for her multimedia performance.

“Everything about this show is special...a visual and auditory experience that’s interactive, striking and worth experiencing.” Guitar World

“It's a beautiful thing when two entirely different art forms fit so well together that the boundaries between vision and sound, hand and ear, line and note, begin to blur. We're feeling that particular kind of synesthesia...” Huffington Post

“King’s evocative performance was a sumptuous feast for the senses, a dizzying display of sound and vision by a guitarist already renowned for her innovation.”

Boston Globe

“If there’s one thing you can predict about the iconoclastic avant-guitarist Kaki King, it’s that the only thing you expect her to do next is that she’ll do the unexpected, every time.” - Digital Trends
